Recap: DIY PR Happy Hour

Last week we hosted our first DIY PR Happy Hour! The event, which sold-out two weeks in advance of it taking place, was held on Wednesday, September 26.

We welcomed 16 local professionals to our shared studio space in Ohio City to meet and teach them how to get their hands dirty with their own PR efforts.

We opened up the night with some mingling and munchies! This was a chance for everyone to exercise that one skill we all know we need: networking. Meeting other professionals in the same or similar career areas as yourself present invaluable connections and recognition for any future collaboration. Everyone hit it off, and we can’t wait to see what future relationships blossom from this!

After we got some food and wine in, the learning began. During our session, Reena answered the these questions:

  • What is the difference between PR and Marketing?

  • Why is PR important and how does it help build revenue?

  • What assets do I need to prepare before sending my pitch?

  • How do I find the outlets and reporters that would be interested in my brand?

  • What are some affordable resources to help me DIY PR?

DIY PR Reena

We kicked things off with some comprehensive definitions of the different aspects of PR and the differences between public relations and marketing. As most of our guests are what we like to call solopreneurs, it becomes important to distinguish what kinds of media they can get, and how. Reena outlined the importance of paid, earned, shared, and owned media and divulged how each intersects and is used to promote a brand in the press.

In addition to making the connection to press, you need to have something to offer them. Everyone at FACTEUR wholeheartedly believes in the power of prepping for publicity, and that includes building a press kit. We shared and discussed some press kits that we recently developed for clients which showed off their brand and gave background on their history and offerings. Not only does this give a reporter an easy and beautiful run-down of exactly what you’re all about, but they also are handy to have for others as well. (Think investors, advertisers, and partners.) If you want a better idea of exactly what goes into a press kit, check out our blog post on the Top 10 Things You Need in a Press Kit.

Reena then shared her 12 Steps to DIY PR, a highlight of DIY PR Happy Hour. These steps are the reason most of our attendees came out for the event, and we made it easy to understand the process of prepping for and procuring your own media coverage. The steps are a simplified version of what we do here at FACTEUR every day, and we think everyone will find them comprehensive and easy to follow, with patience and perseverance.

From one attendee: “Thank you for hosting your DIY PR Happy Hour last week. I truly did not know what to expect from this event but your presentation and the attendees truly blew me away. I've never experienced a group of people willing to create a community of professionals who were so open and willing to help others so quickly. I am still on a high of inspiration from this event.”

If you, or someone you know, want to get your hands on these steps, and/or don’t have the budget to outsource publicity services for your brand, DIY PR is for you. Keep an eye out for more events like this one hosted by FACTEUR. In the meantime, be sure not to miss our upcoming Marketing Planning Brunch on November 3!

We hope to see everyone again soon, and to see some new faces at our next event!

Office Jams: Summer 2018 Playlist

Music has always been an enormous part of my life. In fact, if it wasn’t for music, I don’t think I’d be working in the field of marketing and public relations.

Some of us love peace and quiet while we’re working. That is largely true for me, especially when I’m doing a lot of writing. But much of the time I do love some music in the background that keeps me energized and inspired to conquer the tasks and projects ahead of me. I shared a productivity playlist here last spring, and we’ll plan on sharing these more regularly each season. We hope this puts a little pep in your step - enjoy!

FACTEUR PR Holiday 2017 Playlist

The holidays are exhausting, so it's no wonder it's a relief for a lot of folks that they will finally be over in just a couple of short weeks. I happen to love the holidays, but one thing that does continue to tire me about them is the music. We recently created a holiday-themed playlist for our client Banyan Tree during a blogger party, and we thought it would be fun to create one for our other clients and friends! Whether you're jamming away at your desk or looking for new tunes to play at your store while your customers shop or party, we think you'll dig this Hip Holiday playlist.

With a semester at KSU's Florence, Italy campus and excursions to surrounding countries, Anna offers a fresh perspective and an eye for what's trending; her additional studies in fashion media and marketing combined with an adventurous approach with her camera make her excited for what is to come for her future!

Anna will join Julie Hong through December - please join us in welcoming her to the team! Leave a comment below, and feel free to send her an email. Plus, stay tuned for some blogs and other great content from Anna and Julie throughout the coming months here on the FACTEUR blog!

Office Jams: Spring 2017 Playlist

Music has always been an enormous part of my life. In fact, if it wasn’t for music, I don’t think I’d be working in the field of marketing and public relations.

In the late 90s at the age of 13, I built my first website and designed my first e-mail newsletter on behalf of a band I adored at the time. I also was a contributing writer to their fan club zine (that came in the mail every month!). Realizing my passion for music and writing led me to get a degree in Public Affairs Journalism in college, which is when I began my career specifically in music marketing for major record labels. It’s been one of the highlights of my career thus far! And while I love music, I haven’t played an instrument since high school (guitar and flute!), but have expressed the performance piece in a different way.

This month is a special month for me because I’m celebrating my seventh year as a professional DJ. While I don’t play as much as I used to since launching FACTEUR, I still love to compile playlists and share them with clients and friends.

Some of us love peace and quiet while we’re working. That is largely true for me, especially when I’m doing a lot of writing. But much of the time I do love some music in the background that keeps me energized and inspired to conquer the tasks and projects ahead of me. I shared a summer productivity playlist here last summer, and we’ll plan on sharing these more regularly each season. We hope this puts a little pep in your step - enjoy!

FACTEUR PR welcomes Julie Hong to its team

julie-hong-facteur-pr

We are so excited to welcome our summer intern, Julie Hong, to the FACTEUR PR team! Julie is currently finishing her third year at University of Georgia, where she studies Public Relations and New Media and has experience in community relations, media relations, social media, event planning, and more. During the school year, she is part of the Publicity Committee at her school’s PRSSA chapter and the occasional staff writer for seasonal publications. A California girl who moved to Atlanta at age 16, she loves to say ‘y’all’ but still gets confused when she hears ‘fixin ‘to’. She is personal, positive, and a people-person who feels strongest when she is a part of a team (and already has a lot of great, innovative ideas!), so we are thrilled she’s “ecstatic to be joining Facteur PR as a digital intern for the summer, and can’t wait to get plugged in!”

Julie will be with us through August - please join us in welcoming her to the team! Leave a comment below, and feel free to send her an email. Plus, stay tuned for some blogs and other great content from Julie throughout the coming months here on the FACTEUR blog!

FACTEUR PR recognized by PR Couture

For as much publicizing as us publicists do on behalf of our clients, one would think we would devote the same amount of time and energy to promoting ourselves, but that simply is not the case. PR and marketing are such behind-the-scenes careers where the primary responsibility is to make others look and sound really good. That's just one reason why being publicly recognized for the work that you do is such an honor.

I've been a big fan of PRcouture.com, which is a wonderful resource for public relations and media professionals who are focused mainly on lifestyle communications. Therefore, you can imagine my excitement when selected and featured for PR Girls We Love! I did a Q&A covering the highs and lows of PR, my career journey so far, as well as some industry trends. You can read the full post here.

A very special thank you to the amazing ever so valuable PR Couture for this opportunity, and to Suzuran Photography for the accompanying photos! And a HUGE thank you to our clients and friends, too; without you, there would be no story to tell.

Cheers,
Reena

Workin' it: a summer playlist for productivity

We seriously can't believe how fast the summer is flying by.

Hopefully you've been able to get in some rest and relaxation, a little traveling, and some patio happy hours. But summer isn't a three month holiday unless perhaps you work in academia. It can be so hard to stay focused on your work and the goals that you have set for yourself when the sun is beckoning you to come out and play.

Something that helps keep me motivated in anything I'm doing is music. Whether its the beat, the lyrics, or the emotion in a song, having the right playlist can make or break my productivity.

So in the spirit of a productive summer, we've put together this playlist at below for you to rock out to at your office this season. We hope it will get your ideas and inspiration back up high.

Enjoy!
