How to Prepare for a Media Interview: Media Training Tips for Experts
Saying yes to a media interview can be one of the most valuable opportunities for your brand. But getting the interview is only part of the equation. How you prepare, communicate your expertise, and deliver your answers matters just as much.
Too many great media opportunities are wasted on responses that are thin, vague, or clearly not written by the person whose name appears on them. And when a journalist is looking for an expert perspective, the quality of your answers can make all the difference.
In this solo episode of Grow Your Wellth, I walk you through the exact media training process we use with clients at FACTEUR PR. It's built around three phases: prep, practice, and analysis.
Most of the real work happens before the interview even begins.
Preparation starts with researching the reporter and understanding the story angle. From there, it's about building a message that has structure, support, and style, so your expertise comes through clearly and your answers are useful to the journalist.
I also share six tips for making your responses more quote-ready, including one mistake I see experts make: copying and pasting answers directly from a press release or AI-generated content. Journalists are becoming increasingly savvy at recognizing responses that don't sound authentic to the person being interviewed.
But preparation alone isn't enough. Practice is what helps you put that preparation to work.
That's why I discuss the value of mock interviews and recording yourself, along with the nonverbal details that can shape how you come across. Gestures, pauses, eye contact, and even what you wear are all worth considering as you prepare to represent yourself and your brand.
And the process doesn't end when the interview is over.
The final phase, analysis, is about looking back at how the interview went and identifying what you want to improve next time. It's where "I should have" becomes "I will next time."
Because confidence doesn't come from preparation alone. It comes from doing the reps.
Whether you have a major media interview coming up or you're just beginning to accept opportunities to share your expertise, this episode will help you approach the process with more preparation, practice, and intention.
